R.I.P. Steve "Chunky" Chandler

Steve Chandler was a man on a mission, a crusader against mediocrity, a firm believer in hard work, charity and the simple pleasures in life - he also occasionally enjoyed the odd beer and the company of all manner of people.

In short Steve was the perfect publican and went about proving this by buying and running Ye Olde Cherry Tree in Little Oakley. The pub quickly built up an excellent reputation for good food and drink and a superb atmosphere where people could do business, unwind and make new friends - everything a great pub should be.

Steve was a real character and after a warm welcome would act as a catalyst for conversation and relaxation. He was always wearing that famous smile and often deployed his famous laugh that could be heard above the chatter on a packed Friday evening or Sunday lunchtime.

If the weather, politics or rigours of daily life failed to provide adequate conversation Steve could draw on his ex-pat life in the Middle East for anecdotes and a bit of light relief - like the time he smuggled brewers yeast in his underpants!

Having received a whole host of richly deserved awards it is an unbelievable tragedy that Steve never got to enjoy the retirement he deserved with his wife and daughters. He has however walked tall into that hall of fame of the truly great publicans and his generosity and spirit have created an indelible memory in the hearts and minds of all those that were fortunate enough to know him.
