Harwich Town Sailing Club Logo

Harwich Town Sailing Club is a warm friendly sailing club committed to promoting sailing as an all round family activity in all its forms, from championship racing to pottering about in and around the harbour area.  Over the years, the club has helped many sailors become national and even world champions in their class.

The clubs dinghy racing program starts at the end of March and finishes around the end of October, with the exception of the race on Boxing Day.  Most racing takes place off Harwich beach on Sunday mornings and together with Shotley Sailing Club at Shotley on Wednesday evenings

Apart from the racing, the sailing schedule is sprinkled with beach days and barbeques just for fun, along with day cruises around the picturesque Stour and Orwell rivers as well as the Walton backwaters.

In 2008 the club achieved accreditation as both an RYA Training and RYA OnBoard Centre and offers cadet training between May and August.  The cadet training is operated by members who are RYA qualified instructors using a large fleet of club boats, (8 Toppers, 6 Optimists, 2 Laser Picos, & 1 RS Feva).

The club has a varied social calendar, covering all sorts of activities from social meals, quiz nights, yoga, and pantomimes.

The clubhouse has panoramic views over Harwich Harbour and includes a well equipped galley, bar, and changing rooms including both exercise equipment and sauna.

The Club holds dinghy races in the Harbour most weekends and during the week together with a neighbouring club (Shotley). There are also a number of cruiser races during the year which are run together with Harwich and Dovercourt Sailing Club. (See Sailing Schedule on our website). There is a mixture of boats in the park but the keener sailors tend to race Lasers or Cats. Although there are quite a few Mirrors they don't seem to make it on to the water in any great number at any one time. Sadly, we have only a small number of active junior members at present.

The sailing at Harwich is excellent. You can stick to the harbour area or explore the rivers Stour and Orwell, or head out to the more open waters of Dovercourt Bay and perhaps visit the Walton backwaters. If you have a cruiser the world's your oyster.

Harwich Town Sailing Club provides excellent facilities for the sailor which include:

  • Easy access to the water at all states of the tide
  • Easy access to the water from the road
  • Plenty of parking for cars and trailers
  • A large enclosed boat park
  • A well equipped boat shed
  • A comfortable clubhouse with a wonderful view of the harbour. There is a large changing room with showers and sauna.
And in the town there is
  • A boat repairers and chandlers (AW Sailboats)
  • A sail maker (Dolphin Sails)
  • Plenty of accommodation and places to eat

Like most sailing clubs there are also plenty of activities off the water too. At present we have in the region of 200 members and the Club enjoys a healthy social life.

We can be found at the very end of the A120 at OS TM 262327. Harwich Town railway station is only 500 yards away and trains run each hour.

The club offers membership at the variety of rates, please see our website for current prices.
