HEAT in Action

We are a local environmental group comprising like-minded individuals drawn from several sectors of the community. Our goal is to tackle environmental issues pertinent to Harwich, Dovercourt and the surrounding area. At present HEAT is fighting for improvements to the quality of the local marine environment. Our calls for ultra-violet light treatment for sewage has received the backing of Harwich Town Council, the Marine Conservation Society, Surfers Against Sewage, and Friends of the Earth, amongst others.

HEAT has built up its own environmental roadshow which has toured such events as Clacton Police Fun Day and we have received many invitations to speak at local schools. In the short time since HEAT has been established we have featured in the internationally circulated Reader’s Digest magazine and have become an information resource for graduates, environmental correspondents, the BBC and other environmental organisations.

The Aid Relief Kosovo (ARK) Appeal

HEAT is currently heavily involved in the ARK appeal. This relief effort concentrates its efforts on the smaller camps in Albania as well as Albanian families who are taking in refugees. With good feedback from volunteers on the ground and efficient dispatching from its warehouse in Harwich, it is able to react quickly to events — and therefore to fill gaps not catered for by the larger agencies.

“the ARK appeal needs donations of food and cash”

The ARK appeal needs donations of food, particularly tinned and baby food, and cash to send the relief to Albania. Goods and donations of cash can be made at the group’s Harwich depot at the former Mercedes building at Stour Road in Harwich. Cheques and postal orders, made payable to the Ark Appeal, can also be sent to the address below.
